Hwang Dong-Hyuk Says Next Film ‘K.O Club’ Is “More Violent” Than ‘Squid Game’

Following the hit Netflix series “Squid Game,” Korean director/creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk has certainly been placed in the spotlight. The director has seemingly already made a deal with the streaming giant to return for a second season as CEO Ted Sandros indicated the series was moving forward during an earnings interview in January. But more “Squid Game” is not the only thing in the works from the latest voice in mature genre entertainment.

Dong-Hyuk spoke during a session at MipTV 2022 (via Variety) alongside his producer Jun-Young Jang from February Films, revealing that he’s working on a film called “Killing Old People Club,” aka, “K.O. Club” and is inspired by a novel from Italian writer Umberto Echo.

He calls the new project “another controversial film,” and adds that “it will be more violent than ‘Squid Game,'” which is saying a lot. It’s unclear when production will begin or who will end up distributing in the west.

There was also a “Squid Game” update as Dong-Hyuk is about to return to South Korea to begin writing season two and hopes that it will begin airing on Netflix by 2024, which should give fans an idea of how long they’ll have to wait for the follow-up. Waiting a little longer to get something properly planned out is certainly refreshing to hear when they could have easily rushed a second season.

While we’ll have to wait for a synopsis or details on the next season of “Squid Game,” Seong Gi-hun’s return had previously been teased by the show’s creator last year. Given the show’s massive success, Netflix could end up pouring more money into the budget and amping up the scale to gloriously violent new heights.
