It’s a tired phrase, but I’m going to use it anyway: one of the biggest movies of the year is getting even bigger. Taking $200 million worldwide at the box office, Universal‘s gangster rap drama "Straight Outta Compton" was one of the summer’s biggest surprise hits, and it was also a lengthy one. Clocking in at two hours and twenty seven minutes, it packed in the rise and fall of N.W.A., but also touched up on how they inspired the West Coast rap scene that followed in their wake. And soon, the movie is going bring the beat back on home video, and there will be even more to check out.
Universal Home Video has announced that when "Straight Outta Compton" arrives on Blu-ray early next year, it will be packing a Director’s Cut (but also the theatrical version, if that’s how you’d prefer to roll). There will be twenty minutes of new footage, but no word yet on what scenes might be included, so you’ll just have to sit tight. Meanwhile, the film will finally get an official soundtrack release (reminder: Dr. Dre‘s Compton was not connected to the movie, though that it hit stores, just a few weeks before the movie opened, is not a coincidence), bringing with it some N.W.A. cuts as well as Joseph Trapanese‘s score.
