Pedro Almódovar is one of the greatest living filmmakers, and there aren’t many people out there who would disagree. And though his films have captivated audiences all over the world throughout his career, he has only barely dipped his toes into English-language filmmaking, debuting the short film, “The Human Voice,” in 2020. His next English-language project, “Strange Way of Life,” still plays in the short film space, but it finds Almódovar venturing into the world of Westerns.
As seen in the trailer for “Strange Way of Life,” Pedro Almódovar has enlisted two of the best actors working today, Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke, to tell the story of a Western featuring two men who fall in love and the complicated ways their lives cross over. Here’s how the filmmaker describes the film in his Cannes write-up:
“A man rides a horse across the desert that separates him from Bitter Creek. He comes to visit Sheriff Jake. Twenty-five years earlier, both the sheriff and Silva, the rancher who rides out to meet him, worked together as hired gunmen. Silva visits him with the excuse of reuniting with his friend from his youth, and they do indeed celebrate their meeting, but the next morning Sheriff Jake tells him that the reason for his trip is not to go down the memory lane of their old friendship….”
Joining Hawke and Pascal in the cast are Pedro Casablanc, Manu Ríos, George Steane, José Condessa, Jason Fernández, Sara Sálamo, Ohiana Cueto, and Daniela Medina. Almódovar is debuting his short at this year’s Cannes Film Festival before it finds a wider release, courtesy of MUBI, at a later date.
