Suggestions? ‘True Detective’ Writer Nic Pizzolatto Teases Female Detectives For Season 2

True Detective

By now, you’ve likely seen the pretty excellent #TrueDetectiveSeason2 trend on Twitter, with folks offering up their (funny) suggestions (here’s ours) for who should take over the lead roles when the second season of “True Detective” moves ahead at HBO. (It’s not officially confirmed, but seems inevitable at this point.) But in all seriousness, as the first season highlighted, writer/creator Nic Pizzolatto‘s pen is capable of crafting truly memorable, complex parts for whoever takes the creative reins, and in an intriguing little twist he suggested on Twitter that women may get the central focus next time.

There has been some criticism of late that women are underrepresented or underwritten in the show, but that criticism sort of misses the point. “True Detective” is very much about women being ignored, abused and victimized in an atmosphere where religion and power structures don’t seem to have much regard for females (or children for that matter). Rust Cohle is haunted by death of his daughter, while Martin Hart continually takes his children and wife for granted, and uses women in general as objects. It’s a specific, horrific culture Pizzolatto is crafting.

But switching up the POV, as he hints at in his tweet, would be pretty inspired, particularly since Pizzolatto isn’t bound to any specific setting or story since “True Detective” seasons will be self-contained. So now the big question: if there are two big female roles for “True Detective” season 2, who should they be?
Sound off in the comments below and if you haven’t seen “True Detective” yet, get on it—there are only two episodes left.
