With San Diego Comic Con coming up and numerous sites getting ready to fill galleries full of cosplay pictures, which often feature plenty of cleavage plunging, long legged variation of superheroes, perhaps these comments by "Suicide Squad" star Cara Delevinge carry a bit more weight. It might not be the most artfully constructed critique of sexism in the comic book industry, but it should certainly get more than a few debates fired up across the internet.
“Generally…superhero movies are totally sexist," the actress told Empire (via THR). "Female superheroes are normally naked or in bikinis. No one would be able to fight like that. Wonder Woman, how the hell does she fight? She would be dead in a minute.”
While Warner Bros. probably isn’t too pleased to hear Delevinge throw Wonder Woman under the bus as they are trying to mount a big screen movie based around the character, she does at least defend "Suicide Squad" and its portrayal of women. “There are only three girls in [Suicide Squad] but in my opinion they have the best roles,” she said.
That may be so, but all one has to do is look around the internet at the set photos of Margot Robbie on set and the various fanboy drooling comments that accompany said shots, and one realizes that maybe the problem isn’t the characters so much as how certain parts of the fandom receive them as nothing more than people to lust over.
