If you’re a cinephile, December and January is one of the best times of the year. Not only do the meaty awards season contenders start playing at a theater near you, but Sundance brings forth a whole new crop of movies to get excited about. And with organizers unveiling their most promising batch of titles yet yesterday, the first trailer for one of them has emerged.

The Guard” writer/director John Michael McDonagh re-teams with Brendan Gleeson and returns with “Calvary.” Co-starring Chris O’Dowd, Aidan Gillan, Dylan Moran and Kelly Reilly, the film looks to be another blend of cutting comedy and some drama, this time with issues of religion, reputation and faith taking the fore. Here’s the official synopsis:

Calvary is a blackly comedic drama about a priest tormented by his community. Father James is a good man intent on making the world a better place. When his life is threatened one day during confession, he finds he has to battle the dark forces closing in around him.

“Calvary” opens in the UK and Ireland on April 11, 2014 but no U.S. date or distributor just yet—but that could all change after Sundance. [The Guardian]
