“Thor: Love And Thunder,” Taika Waititi’s follow-up to his 2017 breakout “Thor: Ragnarok,” finally hits theaters on Friday. And advance reviews are, well, okay so far? It sounds like Waititi is still having fun making wacky, colorful superhero flicks, but for some critics, the Marvel formula is a little stale. A little? But that’s a topic for another time.
Whatever Waititi’s future is with Thor and the MCU, he’s still a highly sought-after creator right now. And he has several more projects on the way, like new seasons of “Our Flag Means Death” and “Reservation Dogs,” as well as his soccer dramedy, “Next Goal Wins.” But he also has a potential “Star Wars” project on the horizon, although it remains unclear if Waititi gets the go-ahead from Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy to make it. Many “Star Wars” fans want to see what Waititi does with another blockbuster franchise, but will he even get the chance?
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Waititi opened up about the possibility that his idea for a “Star Wars” film may never reach production. And how does he feel about it? Well, he’s at peace with it. “Might happen to me!” Waititi said when the interviewer brought up the massive backlog of abandoned “Star Wars” projects from over the years. “And I think Taika [of] 10 years ago would be so panicked and nervous at the prospect of that. But if it’s not right, it’s not right. If it’s not ready, it’s not ready. [With] Star Wars, I don’t want to rush.” That sounds like the perspective of an older, wiser Waititi with experience that some creative endeavors don’t pan out.
And Waititi also made it clear that while he won’t be disappointed if his “Star Wars” film doesn’t pan out, he won’t compromise his voice to make sure it happens. “It’s something I wouldn’t want to just leap into and not feel that it’s unique, it’s my film, and it makes sense,” continued Waititi, “Because that would be a disaster. I’m writing at the moment. So I’m gonna do my best to come up with an idea that everyone loves.” So, Waititi wants to make sure whatever he writes stays faithful to him, and if it’s not what Kennedy & company want, then that’s fine.
What would Taika Waititi’s take on the “Star Wars” universe look like, anyway? Would it be a bombastic flurry of color and wild glee like “Thor: Ragnorok” or something like “What We Do In The Shadows,” only with Jedi or Sith lords instead of vampires? Waititi’s already made it apparent he wants to expand the scope of the galaxy far, far away to accommodate new characters beyond the Skywalker saga. Whatever happens, Waititi sounds like he’s staying true to himself, and if Lucasfilm doesn’t like what he comes up with, he’ll take the missed opportunity in stride.
