Got a Tip?

‘The Batman II’ Now Headed To 2027, ‘Mickey 17’ Moves To March

Fans of Matt Reeves‘ Gotham City universe are going to have a little bit longer for “The Batman II” to arrive. Warner Bros. has now moved the release date for the highly anticipated sequel to Oct. 1, 2027. That will be five and a half years after the original debuted on March 4, 2022. For context, by the time it hits theaters, there will already have been primary debates for the…2028 Presidential election.

The Robert Pattinson starring sequel is expected to begin production this summer, but according to Deadline, the move is to make sure the VFX isn’t rushed to make its original October 2, 2026 opening day. Jumping on that slot is the “untitled” Alejandro González Iñárritu project starring Tom Cruise. Produced and financed by Legendary, that movie also features Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, and Riz Ahmed. Both movies are now assured IMAX screens on their new dates. And, noteworthy, the big-budgeted Iñárritu flick, which finds Cruise playing a billionaire who thinks he’s humanity’s savior, is now in a prime awards season release slot.

In a bigger surprise, Warner Bros. has also flipped the release dates of Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” and Bong Joon Ho’s “Mickey 17.” “Sinners” will open on April 18 and “Mickey 17” on March 7. Reportedly, “Sinners” needs more time in post-production due to the “scarcity” of labs to do the post-production work on film. That is a laughable excuse (the movie will barely be projected on film), but whatever.

This is the third date for Joon Ho’s follow-up to “Parasite.” Warner Bros. was originally intending to dump the film on January 31. The new date ensures it won’t premiere at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival, but, in theory, could be a surprise at Sundance or Berlin. However, neither is likely considering the reports of disagreements over the cut between Joon Ho and the studio.

“Sinners” is Coogler’s first directorial effort since “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” The horror-thriller stars Michael B. Jordan as twins who, according to a studio synopsis, “return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.” It also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, and Delroy Lindo, among others. It’s also Jordan’s first starring role since “Creed III” earned $274 million global almost two years ago.

For those wondering what “The Batman II’s” push to 2027 means for another season of the massive hit “The Penguin,” HBO’s Casey Bloys has already noted publicly that any second go around would occur following the next film.
