Got a Tip?

‘The Batman’: Matt Reeves Was Inspired By Gus Van Sant’s Kurt Cobain & The Safdies’ ‘Good Time’ When Writing Bruce Wayne

One of the most memorable parts of the trailers for “The Batman” is the use of Nirvana’s “Something in the Way” to underscore the darkness and the vibe of the film. This isn’t comic book Batman. This is something…different. And for Matt Reeves, the Nirvana song isn’t just a cool needle drop, but it’s one of the big inspirations for the film.

Speaking to Empire, filmmaker Matt Reeves talked about his inspirations for the character of Bruce Wayne in “The Batman.” Instead of being the billionaire playboy, a darker Tony Stark, if you will, which is how he is often portrayed in the comics, Reeves wanted to go in a different direction. A Kurt Cobain/Nirvana-inspired direction.

“When I write, I listen to music, and as I was writing the first act, I put on Nirvana’s ‘Something In The Way,’” Reeves revealed. “That’s when it came to me that, rather than make Bruce Wayne the playboy version we’ve seen before, there’s another version who had gone through a great tragedy and become a recluse. So I started making this connection to Gus Van Sant’sLast Days,’ and the idea of this fictionalized version of Kurt Cobain being in this kind of decaying manor.”

So, as he was writing his Kurt Cob-Wayne (puns!), it just so happened another bit of inspiration struck. You see, Reeves saw the Safdie Brothers’ incredible crime thriller, “Good Time,” and was captivated by Robert Pattinson in the film.

“In that movie, you could really feel his vulnerability and desperation, but you could also feel his power,” said Reeves. “I thought that was a great mix. He’s also got that Kurt Cobain thing, where he looks like a rock star, but you also feel like he could be a recluse.”

When you think about this recluse nature of the Bruce Wayne character, it puts the footage from “The Batman” in a bit more of a favorable context. Pattinson is playing his version of Bruce Wayne and Batman exactly as Reeves intended. Moody af.

“The Batman” arrives in theaters on March 22, 2022. You can hear the Nirvana song in the teaser below:
