'The Commandant's Shadow' Trailer: New Documentary Tells True Story That Inspired 'Zone Of Interest'

Without a doubt, “The Zone of Interest” is one of the most decorated films of the last year. In addition to being our #1 movie of 2023, the Holocaust drama would go on to win the Oscar for Best International Film (complete with one of the most controversial acceptance speeches of the past several years). Regardless of what you might think about Jonathan Glazer’s film, the story behind it is inspired by a true story, which is explored in the new documentary, “The Commandant’s Shadow.”

Directed by Daniela Völker, “The Commandant’s Shadow,” as seen in the new trailer, tells the story of Hans Jürgen Höss, the son of Rudolf Höss, who served as the Camp Commandant at Auschwitz. Hans goes on a journey where he talks about what it was like to live a life with his family mere yards away from one of the most horrific places humanity has ever seen. In addition to telling his story, Hans takes time to meet survivors of the Holocaust and reckon with the atrocities his father played a role in.

The film also uses excerpts from Rudolf Höss’ autobiography, detailing exactly what happened decades ago in horrific detail. In addition, the film tells the amazing true stories of survivors, including someone who credits the ability to play cello with saving his life.
