Gareth Edwards hasn’t directed a film in seven years. There could be a number of reasons why, but unfortunately for him, his last film, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” was shrouded in controversy as it was heavily reported that Edwards was effectively replaced midway through production by Tony Gilroy because the former’s first cut of the film was a mess. This created a sort of takedown of Edwards’ ability as a filmmaker, forgetting that he was also the man who directed “Monsters” and “Godzilla,” both very decent high-concept films. Well, it appears Edwards is looking for a bit of redemption with his next film, “The Creator,” and if the teaser is any indication, it looks like the seven-year break might have paid off.

As seen in the teaser for “The Creator,” the film follows the story of a future where artificial intelligence (A.I.) has taken over the planet, and there exists a war between humans and robots. Pretty timely, wouldn’t you say? In the middle of this war, there’s a soldier who is attempting to kill the Creator, but in doing so, discovers that the big secret that the robots have been hiding is an advanced AI in the form of a young child.
The film stars John David Washington (“Tenet”), Gemma Chan (“Eternals”), Ken Watanabe (“Inception”), Sturgill Simpson (“Dog”), Allison Janney (“I, Tonya”), and newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles.
“The Creator” debuts in theaters on September 29. You can watch the teaser below.
Here’s the synopsis:
Amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua (Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself. Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.
