Horror movies are big business for Hollywood as 20th Century Studios is bringing back the “Omen” franchise from the grave with a new legacy prequel film titled “The First Omen.” They’ve just released a brand new trailer (see below) for the film directed by Arkasha Stevenson (a filmmaker who directed episodes of FX’s “Legion”), which is set to be released early next month in theaters. Of course, the original movie from the 1970s focused on a young boy named Damien Thorn, who is adopted into a family only to be revealed as the Antichrist, the son of Satan.
The studio’s logline for the horror pic is as follows:
When a young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her own faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.”
“The First Omen.” cast consists of Nell Tiger Free (“Servant”), Tawkeef Barhom (“Mary Magdalene”), Sonia Braga (“Kiss of The Spider Woman”), Ralph Ineson (“The Witch”), and Bill Nighy (“Living”).
Based on characters created by David Seltzer (“The Omen”), who wrote the original 1976 film that starred Gregory Peck and was directed by the late Richard Donner (“Lethal Weapon”), the new story hails from Ben Jacoby (“Bleed”) and a screenplay by Tim Smith, Arkasha Stevenson, Keith Thomas (“Firestarter”).
There have been three sequels to “The Omen,” and the most recent remake was released in 2006 with Liev Schreiber and Julia Stiles in the roles of Robert and Katherine. I’m sure the hope from 20 Century Studios, if widespread, is that they could potentially make more installments, given the lower budgets of horror properties are undoubtedly tempting.
