‘The Front Room’ Trailer: Brandy Stars In A New A24 Psychological Horror From The Filmmaking Brothers of Robert Eggers

Known for “The Witch,” “The Northman,” and the upcoming “Nosferatu” vampire remake, Robert Eggers has quickly become one of cinema’s premiere horror filmmakers. But he’s not the only one in the family who caught the filmmaking bug. Making their directorial debut this fall, The Eggers brothersMax and Sam Eggers, have written and directed a new psychological horror film titled “The Front Room” for A24.

They’re not without experience either; Sam Eggers worked on “The Witch” and wrote the Olympia Dukakis doc “Olympia,” and Max Eggers was a co-writer on Robert’s acclaimed 2019 surreal comedy, “The Lighthouse.” The film also takes the inspired move of casting multi-talented 90s icon Brandy Norwood, known for classic lead roles in “Moesha” and “Cinderella,” to iconic R&B hits that are even being widely discussed today with Ariana Grande’s take on “The Boy Is Mine.” But Brandy is arguably best remembered in movies for her turn in “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer,” so this is arguably a long-belated return to the horror genre.

“The Front Room” looks promising and seems to focus on the ever-growing genre of pregnancy horror touched upon in classics like “Rosemary’s Baby,” but more recent films like “Mother,” “Swallow,” “Titane” and the Illan Glazer starring “False Positive.”

While cryptic so far in terms of all its details, “The Front Room” tells the story of a young, newly pregnant couple who is forced to take in an ailing, estranged stepmother.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Everything goes to hell for newly-pregnant Belinda (Brandy) after her mother-in-law (Kathryn Hunter) moves in. As the diabolical guest tries to get her claws on the child, Belinda must draw the line somewhere…

On top of Brandy Norwood, the film stars Kathryn Hunter, Andrew Burnap, and Neal Huff. “The Front Room” is written and directed by The Eggers Brothers and based on the 2016 short story of the same name by Susan Hill.

“The Front Room” arrives in theaters on September 6 via A24. Watch the new trailer below.
