Online dating used to be a much more dangerous prospect than it is today. In 2019, odds are apps and websites are exactly how you meet potential love interests. But in the new film by director Bill Condon, “The Good Liar,” we find that even the most gentle, charming people online could be the most devious.
Unlike other films that have tackled this sort of subject, “The Good Liar” presents an online dating nightmare with some of the best, distinguished actors on the planet. Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen star as two single people in the twilight of their lives that meet on an online dating website. After being wined and dined, Mirren’s Betty finds herself moving quickly with her new beau Roy. However, Roy is hiding a secret, namely the fact that he is a career con man that is only after the millions of dollars in Betty’s bank account.

Joining Mirren and McKellen in the cast are Russell Tovey (“Quantico”) and Jim Carter (“Downton Abbey”). As mentioned, the film comes from writer Jeffrey Hatcher (“Mr. Holmes”) and director Bill Condon, who is probably best known for his film “Gods and Monsters,” as well as “Kinsey,” “Dreamgirls,” and most recently, the live-action remake of “Beauty and the Beast.”
“The Good Liar” arrives in theaters on November 15.
Here’s the synopsis:
