“The Hairs Stand Up On The Back Of Your Neck”: David Ayer Talks Jared Leto’s Joker Performance In ‘Suicide Squad’

Suicide Squad"I love helping actors find what methodology works best for them. It’s like tailoring a suit — it’s not one size fits all," director David Ayer told USA Today. And it’s that passion for those in front of the camera that has made him beloved among actors. Of course, he guided Denzel Washington toward an Oscar win for "Training Day," but just looking across his filmography at the roster of talent he has worked with (Brad Pitt in "Fury," Jake Gyllenhaal in "End Of Watch," as a couple of examples) speaks to how respected he is. And on the upcoming "Suicide Squad," he allowed Jared Leto to go full method in his portrayal of the Joker.

"There was almost a pageantry to him, which did translate into the character and the power on screen he has," Ayer said of the actor who apparently was all Daniel Day-Lewis about the role, but in the end, the director says it paid off.

"The hairs stand up on the back of your neck," Ayer said. "If you’re a Batman fan, you have to love/hate the Joker because he’s the best nemesis ever. Just to have him on one of my film sets, it was a very memorable thing for me."

You’ll likely get a good taste of Leto’s performance in the new trailer for "Suicide Squad" which drops tonight. The film opens on August 5th.
