Horror fans have tuned into Netflix for Mike Flanagan‘s multiple hit shows for over a half-decade. But now they’ll need to sign up for a different streamer to get their Flanagan fix. Variety reports that Flanagan and his regular producer Trevor Macy have a new overall TV deal in place, but with Amazon, not Netflix.
Flanagan and Macy’s Intrepid Pictures lived up to their title during their time with Netflix. The pair fearlessly produced several horror series to critical acclaim, including “The Haunting Of Hill House,” “The Haunting Of Bly Manor,” “Midnight Mass,” and this year’s “The Midnight Club.” Flanagan created the first three of those series and co-created the fourth. Macy served as executive producer on all of them.
The pair also did three films for Netflix during their tenure with the company: “Hush” and “Before I Wake” from 2016 and 2017’s “Gerald’s Game.” They also made the film adaptation of “Doctor Sleep,” Stephen King‘s follow-up to “The Shining,” in 2019, albeit not for Netflix. Once again, Flanagan directed and wrote/co-wrote all four films, with Macy on board for each of them as producer.
So, to review: that’s four shows and three films for the Intrepid team during their Netflix deal, with a fifth series, “The Fall Of The House Of Usher,” still forthcoming. Add in “Doctor Sleep,” and that’s nothing short of prolific of Flanagan and Macy. No wonder Amazon wants them to make shows for them.
“Amazon is a studio that we have long admired,” Flanagan and Macy said in a press statement. “Their commitment to engaging in groundbreaking series and content aligns with the ethos of what we have built at Intrepid. We are looking forward to working with the entire Amazon team as we bring our brand of genre productions to the service and audiences around the globe.”
No word yet on what projects will come first for Flanagan and Macy in their new Amazon deal, but the ever-busy duo already have something on their plate. Flanagan’s next film is the sci-fi horror “The Season Of Passage,” based on Christopher Pike‘s 1993 novel of the same name, for Universal. Once that film and “The Fall Of The House Of Usher” (currently in post-production) are complete, expect word on what Intrepid has cooking up with Amazon.
