'The Hobbit: Desolation Of Smaug' & '12 Years A Slave' Lead 19th Empire Award Nominations

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug

In a week’s time, the Oscars will be over, but that doesn’t quite mean the end of awards season, with a few stragglers — normally more populist than high-minded — following in the weeks and months after. Now in their 19th year, the Jameson Empire Awards — run by the UK movie magazine — are more MTV Movie Awards than BAFTAs, in part because they’re voted for by the public.

That’s reflected by the nominees, which feature both critically-lauded Oscar contenders and sci-fi/fantasy blockbusters. Somewhat surprisingly, “The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug” is ahead of the pack, with seven nods, followed by “12 Years A Slave” with six, and “Gravity” and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” with five. It’s a diverse mix, with everything from arthouse fare like “Blue Is The Warmest Color” and “Inside Llewyn Davis” to lower-brow fare like “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues” and “Now You See Me” up for at least something. You can vote for the winners over at Empire here, and the ceremony takes place on Sunday March 30th. Read the full shortlist below.
