Magaro’s entrance makes it three straight Reichardt movies for the actor after “First Cow” and “Showing Up.” He received a Gotham Award nod for Best Actor for his work on Reichardt’s 2019 film, playing a mild-mannered chef who hatches a cooking scheme with a Chinese immigrant in 1820s Oregon country. But it’s unclear who Magaro will play in “The Mastermind.” Reichardt’s latest is about an art heist during the Vietnam War, which sounds like a slight departure for the filmmaker, but perhaps not.

Reichardt continues her long partnership with Filmscience with “The Mastermind,” who have produced all her films since 2006’s “Old Joy.”  Neil Kopp, Anish Savjani, and Vinvent Savino produce through the banner, with MUBI also financing and distributing in North American and other territories (MUBI also distributed “First Cow”).  UTA Independent Film group finances the project, with The Match Factory handling remaining worldwide sales.

“The Mastermind” is one several upcoming projects for Magaro, including Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s “The Bride!,” “The Girl From Köln,” and “Omaha.” Up next for the actor? The Paramount+/Showtime series “The Agency” with Michael Fassbender, which premiere next month. Magaro also stars in “September 5,” in theaters November 29, and already earning some early Oscars buzz. Other recent work includes Celine Song‘s “Past Lives,” which topped several critics’ top-10 lists last year.

With Magaro, O’Connor, and Haim, Reichardt has the makings of a setllar cast for “The Mastermind.” How is this not easily one of the hottest upcoming films based on who’s involved alone?
