Not speaking on the actual quality of his more recent filmography, if there is one wide-reaching filmmaker who seems to have a particular recurring bone to pick with the rich and bougie currently, it is Adam McKay. From his Dick Cheney biopic “Vice” from 2018 to his climate change-concerned dramedy “Don’t Look Up” from last year, McKay seems to be having it up to here with those in power and the amount of power they wield. Even just serving as a producer on a film, this looming concept looks to continue with a movie that finds power through food. Following a teaser for the film released back in June, the first full trailer for the grim comedy horror “The Menu” is now available online to view.
“The Menu” is directed by Mark Mylod, most well-known for directing episodes of both “Game of Thrones” and “Succession” for HBO, who overtook directing duties from the originally-signed-on director Alexander Payne. (This writer admittedly now intensely yearns for the reality where Alexander Payne got to make a horror film.) Based on the brief glimpse at the movie from its previous teaser, “The Menu” looks to be a darkly comedic rendition of “The Most Dangerous Game,” with the possible mindset of making “Eat the rich.” literal. With sleek-looking direction and cinematography, the eternally creepy face of Ralph Fiennes and wide-eyed expressions of Anya-Taylor Joy, as well as a dry sense of humor to compliment the intricate cuisine and bloody murder, “The Menu” will, good or bad, be a unique cinematic dish for viewers this Fall.
Written by Seth Reiss and Will Tracy, distributed by Searchlight Pictures, and starring Anya-Taylor Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Ralph Fiennes, Hong Chau, Janet McTeer, Judith Light, and John Leguizamo, “The Menu” releases in theaters on November 18. Watch the new trailer below.
