The Most Torrented Movies & TV Shows By State May Surprise You

Game Of Thrones, Season 4 finale, The ChildrenAs evidenced by the recent leak of "The Expendables 3," piracy is still a major problem facing Hollywood. And while the illegal downloading of high profile shows and movies grab the most headlines, when you dig a bit deeper into what’s being swapped, a more interesting picture emerges regarding the most sought after content.

The folks at the real estate company Movoto (via Washington Post) have conducted a study examining the most downloaded movies, TV shows and video games in each state (why a real estate company initiated such a study is above this blog’s pay grade). For our purposes, we’re focused on the first two categories, and the results are surprising.

In the TV category, while "Game Of Thrones" has been noted as the most downloaded show on television for years —and indeed, these maps make the case— Texas and Louisiana really love "Awkward." And West Viriginia is the only state in the nation giving "Orphan Black" any torrent love.

When it comes to films, the stats are even more scattered. Floridians really wanted to see the Nick Frost comedy "Cuban Fury"; folks in Maine were aching for "Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist"; Illinois loves their arthouse fare, as per the state’s fondness for "La Grande Bellezza"; Arizona digs shitty Nic Cage movies via "Tokarev." The greatest irony? California, the state Hollywood calls home, torrented last year’s Oscar winner "12 Years A Slave" the most.
