Netflix has a number of films that it is hoping will make waves this awards season. And one of those films is Malcolm Washington’s “The Piano Lesson.”
As seen in the trailer, “The Piano Lesson” tells the story a prized heirloom piano that is causing issues between siblings. The film stars Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, Skylar Aleece Smith, Jerrika Hinton, Gail Bean, Danielle Deadwyler, and Corey Hawkins. “The Piano Lesson” is directed by Malcolm Washington, who co-wrote the script alongside Virgil Williams.
We saw the film during its screening at this year’s Telluride, and in our review, we said, “Like almost all of Wilson’s work, it is a quintessentially American story peppered with characters that should resonate and spark conversation for decades to come. And, like many of Wilson’s literary contributions, translating it into the medium of cinema was no easy task. That Washington’s adaptation is the most successful so far, and in the context of his first film, no less, should be duly celebrated.”
“The Piano Lesson” is in select theaters now and will arrive on Netflix on November 22. You can watch the trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
A battle is brewing in the Charles Household. At the center stands a prized heirloom piano tearing two siblings apart. On one side, a brother (John David Washington) plans to build the family fortune by selling it. On the other, a sister (Danielle Deadwyler) will go to any lengths to hold onto the sole vestige of the family’s heritage. Their uncle (Samuel L. Jackson) tries to mediate, but even he can’t hold back the ghosts of the past.
