Got a Tip?

‘The Place Beyond The Pines’ With Ryan Gosling & Bradley Cooper Gets September 7th Release…In Spain

nullUpdate: Reps for "The Place Beyond The Pines" tell us that the film is currently undated, and not scheduled for release anywhere at the moment. So sorry Spain, you'll have to wait with the rest of us.

One film that was a bit of a question mark before the Cannes Film Festival unveiled their slate last week was Derek Cianfrance's "The Place Beyond The Pines." The generational drama led by Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper was rumored to be one of the films announced, but as we know, that didn't quite happen. But it does seem the movie is near enough to the finish line that release dates are starting to appear….at least overseas.

Rentrak Spain tweeted earlier today that "The Place Beyond The Pines" would hit theaters in the country on September 7th, or if you're looking at it from another perspective, after the Telluride, on the tail end of the Venice Film Festival, and just after TIFF kicks off. It's an interesting bit of news for a number of reasons. Firstly, it indicates that if the movie isn't done now, it will be soon enough. Will Cianfrance take his movie to Venice to show it off there, or does it still have a shot at Cannes?

It should be noted that just a few days before the lineup was confirmed, Variety revealed that the Cannes selection committee would be screening the film (they've basically seen it by now). With a few slots rumored to still be open (mostly likely in the Un Certain Regard category — where "Blue Valentine" unspooled in 2010 — as the In Competition lineup is already well over 20 films), could Cianfrance and company make a late grab at Cannes? We'd wager that will depend on if Mike Patton can get his score done in time (we had been told last month, that for now, Patton's existing music was being used as a temporary score).

But the other question is, when do we get to see it? As far as we know, 'Pines' doesn't have a domestic distributor lined up. But perhaps there is something already cooking and soon to be announced, and the Spain release date was penciled in with the knowledge/collaboration of the film's domestic distributor launching around the same time? Or not. Lots of questions, but at any rate, it looks like in some way or another, 'Pines' is coming soon. [hat tip to los35milímetros]
