Got a Tip?

‘The Room Next Door’ & ‘Emelia Perez’ Top 2024 European Film Awards Nominations

If you are curious as to what films Oscar voters overseas may be inclined to support, look no further than the nominees for the 37th European Film Awards. The European Film Academy revealed this year’s crop of honorees this morning and two potential Best Picture nominees, Pedro Almodovar’s “The Room Next Door” and Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Perez” led all films with four nominations including Best European Film. Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” also earned a Best European Film nom as well as Director and Screenplay.

“Perez,” a Netflix release in the U.S., also took Director, Screenplay, and a European Actress nom for Karla Sofía Gascón. As will occur many times this awards season, Gascón makes history as the first Trans actress nominated in this category. Sony Classics is distributing “Next Door” domestically and they also saw Almodovar earn Director and Screenplay recognition as well as a European Actress nom for Tilda Swinton, her third overall. She won in 2011 for “We Need To Talk About Kevin.”

Magnus von Horn’s “The Girl With The Needle” somehow didn’t land one of the 10 European Film nominations, but it did take two European Actress slots for Trine Dyrholm and Vic Carmen Sonne as well as a European Screenplay nod for von Horn and Line Langebek.

Renate Reinsve rounded out the European Actress field for “Armand” which is also recognized in the European Discovery – Prix FIPRESCI category.

Coralie Fargeat’s critically acclaimed hit “The Substance” earned European Film and European Screenplay nominations. Somehow, Demi Moore was snubbed in European Actress.

The European Actor field features “Queer’s” Daniel Craig, “Souleymane’s Story’s” Abou Sangare, “Bird’s” Franz Rogowski, “Dying’s” Lars Eidinge, and “Conclave’s” Ralph Fiennes, a notable nomination among this voting pool considering how broad the Focus Features release is.

Audiard, Almodovar, and Rasoulof were joined in the European Director field by Andrea Arnold and Maura Delpero for “Bird” and “Vermiglio,” respectively.

This year’s European Film Awards will be handed out on Dec. 7 in Lucerne, Switzerland. The nominees and winners are determined by the approximately 5,000 members of the European Film Academy which is based in Berlin.
