'The Roses': Andy Samberg & Kate McKinnon Join Jay Roach's New Film

If you need some comedic talent, you can do a whole lot worse than finding some ‘SNL’ alums. And that appears to be exactly what the filmmakers behind “The Roses” has decided to do.

According to Searchlight Pictures, Kate McKinnon and Andy Samberg are the latest actors to join the cast of Jay Roach’s new film, “The Roses.” They join a cast that already includes Olivia Colman, Benedict Cumberbatch. Ncuti Gatwa, Sunita Mani, Zoë Chao, Jamie Demetriou, and Belinda Bromilow. As you might guess from the title, the film is actually a reimagining of the 1989 film (as well as the novel), “The War of the Roses.”

The film tells the story of a seemingly perfect married couple who have it all. However, resentments and hostility comes to the surface after one half of the couple experiences some disruption professionally. In the film, Cumberbatch and Colman play the married couple. As mentioned, the film is directed by Jay Roach, based on a script by acclaimed writer Tony McNamara.

“When Searchlight sent me Tony McNamara’s script, I was skeptical, because I loved the original film,” said Roach. “But as a fan of Tony’s darkly hilarious writing, and with Olivia and Benedict attached, I should have known it would go a new and wonderful direction. Adding in this phenomenal dream cast will make this relatable love-story/divorce story a wild cautionary tale.”

“We feel so fortunate to be working with this remarkable, wonderfully hilarious group of actors,” said Matthew Greenfield, President of Searchlight Pictures. “Jay has truly assembled an astounding cast to bring a modernistic impression and contemporary relevance to this reimagining.”

McKinnon and Samberg are both probably best known for their work on ‘SNL.’ Since then, both have had pretty successful careers in film and TV. McKinnon most recently was part of the global box office hit, “Barbie,” while Samberg has appeared in “Spider-Man: Across the SpiderVerse” as well as “Self Reliance.”
