Based on the true story of Charles Sobhraj, the trailer for “The Serpent” teases the eight-part series about the notably dark story of Charles Sobhraj, who is believed to be responsible for the deaths of up to 20 young Western travelers between 1975 and 1976. The show is a co-production between the BBC and Netflix and it co-stars Jenna Coleman as Sobhraj’s girlfriend and accomplice Marie-Andrée Leclerc. The duo carried out their spree of crimes on the “Hippie Trail” across Thailand, Nepal, and India.

The show follows Billy Howle as junior diplomat Herman Knippenberg, who works in Bangkok and unwittingly walks into Sobhraj’s web of crime, and sets off to bring the killer to justice.

The trailer teases a tense cat-and-mouse game and a big departure for Coleman, who has so far stuck playing more virtuous characters like her role in “Doctor Who.” Speaking to Digital Spy, Coleman described her work on the show. “[It] intoxicated me into the dark seductive world of Charles Sobhraj,” Coleman admitted. “I’m so looking forward to delving into hippie trail depths and bringing to life this unfathomable real life story.”
