2022 marked a big screen comeback for David Cronenberg with “Crimes Of The Future,” his first movie since 2014’s “Maps To The Stars.” And in the build-up to his 2022 film’s Cannes premiere, Cronenberg already had his next project lined up for bidders. Now it’s time for “The Shrouds” to hit the festival circuit this year. There’s no news about a premiere date yet, but Bloody Disgusting reports that Cahiers du Cinéma has a first-look image for the film, so maybe another debut on the Croisette is in the works?

Cronenberg regular Vincent Cassell stars alongside Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce, and Sandrine Holt in the Canadian auteur’s latest, a film Kruger described last year as “his most personal” yet. “I was very emotional making it because I knew it was so close to him and he was a little bit detached because of it,” Kruger said about “The Shrouds.” “I could feel him being so vulnerable. I hope it’s going to be great.”
But what’s “The Shrouds” about? The upcoming film sees Cassel as Karsh, an innovative business and grieving widower who creates a cemetery device that allows family members to watch their loved ones decompose in real-time. But as Karsh’s new invention hits the international mainstream, someone desecrates several graves in his cemetery, including his wife’s. Who’s behind these attacks, and what will they do to Karsh’s business and the memories he holds of his late spouse?
Further character details are still under wraps, but Holt plays a mysterious wife of a billionaire who contacts Karsh about a strange project involving her husband. “The Shrouds” also stars Elizabeth Saunders, Jennifer Dale, Eric Weinthal, and Steve Switzman.
Filming wrapped on “The Shrouds” last June, so it should be ready for a festival premiere this year. In the meantime, check out the first image from Cronenberg’s latest below. And while we wait for premiere news on “The Shrouds,” “Crimes Of The Future” is currently streaming on Hulu.
