The traditional romantic comedy is far from dead. Even though the days of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan sending each other emails are long gone, thanks to studios like Netflix (and its never-ending supply of rom-coms) and films like “Crazy Rich Asians,” the rom-com is alive and well. And in the case of “The Tomorrow Man,” these films don’t have to star the latest teen heartthrobs to be relevant, either.

“The Tomorrow Man” tells the story of a man and a woman in the twilight of their lives that meet and begin to date. However, what appears to be a fairly typical romance on the surface is complicated by the partners’ obsessions with the future and the past, respectively. The man fears the end of the world and has built a truly impressive bunker that he shows no one. The woman, on the other hand, is unable to move on from the death of her daughter and is dealing with the traumatic event by distancing herself from people. Together, they try to help each other discover the ability to live in the present and not stress about things that have happened in the past or might happen in the future.
The film stars John Lithgow, Blythe Danner, Derek Cecil, Katie Aselton, Sophie Thatcher, and Eve Harlow. It’s written and directed by Noble Jones, who is probably best known for his music video catalog and is making his debut with this feature film.
“The Tomorrow Man” hits theaters May 22.

Ed Hemsler spends his life preparing for a disaster that may never come. Ronnie Meisner spends her life shopping for things she may never use. In a small town somewhere in America, these two people will try to find love while trying not to get lost in each other’s stuff.
