Even when you take away the fact that HBO’s “The Third Day” has an incredible cast that includes Jude Law and Naomie Harris, there’s enough mystery about the story, as well as the presentation of the series, to keep us intrigued about what’s to come next month. And the new trailer for the show only makes our excitement grow even more.
As seen in the trailer for “The Third Day,” the series tells the story of two outsiders that find their way onto a mysterious island that isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. The series is split into two sections, each three episodes apiece (the UK audiences will also have a chance to watch a special live stage play in between) focused on seemingly separate stories. The first half, titled “Summer” stars Jude Law as a man attempting to come to terms with his grief while discovering what’s going on amongst the townspeople of the island. “Winter,” the second half, follows Harris and her family as they attempt to get away and have a simple vacation, which obviously doesn’t happen.
Joining the aforementioned Law and Harris in the cast are Katherine Waterston and Emily Watson. It’s unclear what roles they play in the series, other than townsfolk on a mysterious island that most certainly harbors some incredibly dark secrets.
“The Third Day” debuts on HBO on September 14.
Here’s the synopsis for both “Summer” and “Winter” sections of the series:
Told over the first three episodes, “Summer” stars Jude Law (HBO’s “The New Pope”) as Sam, a man who is drawn to a mysterious island off the British coast where he encounters a group of islanders set on preserving their traditions at any cost. Isolated from the mainland, Sam is unable to leave the idyllic and dangerously enchanting world he has discovered, where the secretive rituals of its inhabitants bring him to grapple with experiences of loss and trauma hidden in his past through the distorted lens of the present.
“Winter” unfolds over the latter three episodes and stars Naomie Harris (Academy Award nominee for “Moonlight”) as Helen, a strong-willed outsider who comes to the island seeking answers, but whose arrival precipitates a fractious battle to decide its fate as the lines between fantasy and fact are distorted.
