Got a Tip?

Tiffany Haddish, Timothee Chalamet Among Massive 928 New Academy Class

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made history today inviting a record 928 new members as it aims to expedite its long-term goal of a more diverse membership overall.

According to the AMPAS 49% of the new members are women, 38% are People of Color and they represent 59 different countries. These efforts are making an impact. In 2015 just 8% of the members were POC. That percentage has jumped to 16% in 2018. Nine branches also invited more women than men (Actors, Casting Directors, Costume Designers, Documentary, Executives, Film Editors, Makeup Artists and Hairstylists, Producers and Public Relations).

Other figures find the youngest member being 14 and the oldest being 86. 17 Oscar winners were invited along with 92 nominees and the class accounts for 103 Oscar nominations overall.

It should be noted that invitees have to accept membership and there are those that decline to participate.

Some of the notable names may surprise you because you may have assumed they were members already. New recruits for the acting branch include Tiffany Haddish, Jada Pinkett, Timothée Chalamet, Dave Chappelle, Emilia Clarke, Hannibal Burress, Ann Dowd, Taye Diggs, Regina Hall, Lena Headey, Ken Jeong, Mindy Kaling, Toby Jones, Diane Kruger, Daniel Kaluuya, Jennifer Lewis, Blake Lively, George Lopez, Audra McDonald, Chloë Grace Moretz, Randall Park, Bel Powley, Gina Rodriguez, Amy Schumer, Kyra Sedgwick, Harry Shearer, Miles Teller, Damon Wayans, Liv Tyler, Ben Whishaw and Evan Rachel Wood, among others.

Directing invitees have Sean Baker, Michel Gondry, Luca Guadagnino, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Justin Simien and Chloé Zhao in the mix. The Music branch has Ester Dean, Melissa Etheridge and Sufjan Stevens on their list.

A number of invitees were invited to multiple branches including Baker, Zhao, Kumail Nanjiani, Ruben Östlund, Béla Tarr, Ziad Doueiri, Lillian Benson, Karen Rupert Toliver, Harry Hitner and Hong Sang-Too.

As previously reported, this year’s Animated Short Film winner Kobe Bryant was not invited into the organization.
