Since Netflix launched its daily “top 10” ranking earlier this year, it’s been mostly composed of new titles or titles that were just added to the platform. But a peculiar title joined the top 10 ranking on June 24 and has stayed there ever since — the 2015 erotic art house film “Love” directed by Gaspar Noé. The reason for this rise in popularity? A TikTok challenge.

Variety traced the TikTok trend to a video uploaded by user bella_ashley who, based on the popularity of the Polish drama “365 Days” on Netflix, recommended Noé’s film. “If you’ve seen ‘365 Days’ and you liked it, go watch ‘Love’ on Netflix and use this sound to record yourself watching the very beginning,” she says in the video. “I mean the very beginning. Hit play and record yourself and let’s see your reaction.”
“Love” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015, where the 3D drama revolving around unsimulated sex quickly became one of the most controversial films at that year’s edition of the festival. The film follows a young film student living in Paris with his French girlfriend, and the problems that come up when they invite their neighbor into their bed.

Our own Jessica Kiang wrote of the film “Noé, aided by DP Benoit Debie, does know a thing or two about arranging a scene for maximum beauty, and here seems to have been inspired to shoot the too-many acts of vigorous boning with a surprisingly lyrical wash over the graphic details of penises, pubic hair, boobs and bums (no vaginas, though, except once from the inside).”
Now let’s just wait until TikTok discovers “Nymphomaniac.”
