Tilda Swinton receiving the Berlin Film Festival‘s Golden Bear for lifetime achivement last night? Hardly a shock: the actress has had 26 of her films premiere at the fest over her near forty-year career. Instead, THR reports it was Swinton’s follow-up sitdown with the press this morning that provided a surprise.
That’s because Swinton confirmed she won’t star in any film for the near-future, at least for the next year. “I can tell you that when I go home on Monday to Scotland, I’m entering something that I’ve been looking forward to for about 15 years — which is a period of my life when I do something different,” Swinton said. “I can’t quite say what it is, but I can say I’m not shooting a film for the rest of this year. I want more time.”
That’s not to say the actress won’t show up onscreen in 2025. After starring in Pedro Almodóvar‘s “The Room Next Door” and Joshua Oppenheimer‘s “The End” last year, she’ll star in Edward Berger‘s “The Ballad Of A Small Player“ with Colin Farrell this year. Berger’s film will hit Netflix later in 2025, and expect to receive a world premiere at a major festival beforehand.
But what prompted Swinton’s decision to take a break from film acting? For the actress, it’s a myriad number of things, most of all that filmmaking is a “merciless mistress.” Swinton also added that she’s felt “under the last for a while,” particularly with movies no longer getting made like they did in the “BC, or before COVID” marketplace. Whereas previously directors and actors had time to develop projects gradually, Swinton said the current movie climate is “smash-and-grab,” with lots of “insecurity about finance,” which “has been really strenuous for us all.”
“And I need a break,” added the 64-year-old, “so I’m going to have one. I’m going to have some peace and quiet and think and figure what the next 40 years are.” But that doesn’t mean Swinton will be gone from filmmaking for good. “I want to time to develop projects,” continued the actress. “Some are for cinema, some are not — but I need time.”
And with fifteen film credits to her name in the 2020s already, she deserves it. Take all the time you need, Ms. Swinton.
