The Cannes Film Festival won’t be taking place until May, but there are already some early signs from Deadline that star Tom Cruise and “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” could make a splash there ahead of the global release on May 21.
As the outlet points out, the festival has a logical proximity to the French release of the film, and a screening there could help gather some early buzz. An inventive stunt, not unlike the one Cruise attempted at the Paris Olympics’s closing ceremonies last summer could be just the jolt of energy the project needs.
You might remember that “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” had an extremely long and costly production during the start/height of the COVID-19 global pandemic but sadly saw a dramatic dip at the box office. “Dead Reckoning” made $571 million compared to the franchise-high $791.6 million from “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.”
That disappointing response led Paramount to retitle the sequel to “The Final Reckoning” and gave audiences the impression this could be Ethan Hunt’s last mission. This was combined with a new first-look/overall deal with Warner Bros. for a string of projects including the long-gestating sequel to “Edge of Tomorrow.”
The supporting cast assembled alongside Cruise features Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Mariela Garriga, Henry Czerny, Holt McCallany, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Angela Bassett, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, and Frederick Schmidt.
So, in theory, the extra promotion at Cannes could help put more butts in seats than the previous installment. Cruise and Paramount likely will make an announcement soon, but even Deadline suggests the likelihood of it heading there is still 50/50 and are optimistic about the chances.
