While next week marks the official unveiling of the first wave of titles hitting the Toronto International Film Festival and Venice Film Festival this fall, some early word has arrived about the latter.
Variety reports that Venice has scored the World Premiere of two high profile titles coming this fall: Tom Ford‘s “Nocturnal Animals” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams, and Denis Villeneuve‘s “Arrival” also starring Adams. It looks like she’s going to be the belle of the festival ball.

Ford’s picture is based on Austin Wright’s novel “Tony and Susan.” telling a story via shifting perspectives of an art gallery owner who is haunted by her ex-husband’s novel, a violent thriller she interprets as a veiled threat and a symbolic revenge tale. Meanwhile, Villeneuve will be dipping his toes into sci-fi with a movie about an expert linguist recruited by the military to determine whether newly arrived aliens come in peace or are a threat.
Meanwhile, other films expected to debut at Venice include Emir Kusturica‘s “On The Milky Road” (which he said Cannes rejected for political reasons before walking back on those statements) and Wim Wenders‘ “The Beautiful Days of Aranjuez.” Also possibly playing could be Antoine Fuqua‘s “The Magnificent Seven” remake, but that’s not confirmed just yet. Meanwhile, Pablo Larrain‘s “Jackie” has a distant chance, but will likely depend on whether or not it’s finished.
Already confirmed to open the festivities is Damien Chazelle‘s hotly anticipated “La La Land” starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.
Venice runs from August 31st to September 10th.
