With the new trailer for “Venom” that was released recently, the talk didn’t surround the prevalent use of special effects (which look…okay) or the plot of the film. No, instead the big talk was around star Tom Hardy and his unique voice that he’s using for the character. Well, if audiences aren’t sure about the voice he’s using to play a reporter in a superhero action movie, just wait until they hear the voice he’s using to play an aging, ill Al Capone in “Fonzo.”
Recently, we got our first official look at Hardy as Capone in the upcoming Josh Trank-directed film. We say “official” becaus, before the picture, which is your typical film publicity shot, Hardy has already shown fans what he’ll look like under a ton of makeup and prosthetics to embody the crime boss. In fact, the images (see below) that Hardy has posted to Instagram are by far better than the official look.

For those that aren’t familiar, “Fonzo” is the upcoming Al Capone biopic that covers the final years of the historical figure, and his battle with dementia. The production is said to have taken six weeks, with each day being long, 19-hour slogs.
Back to his voice, in a recent Esquire profile, Hardy describes his inspiration for the voice of Capone. You may think he draws inspiration from the mountains of crime films or perhaps some real-life sources. Nope. Hardy is looking at “Looney Tunes” for his ideas. He says in the report that he was mostly inspired by Bugs Bunny for his role as Capone. In fact, Esquire backs that up saying, “…he sounds like the cartoon rabbit with a severe case of vocal fry.”
But Hardy doesn’t rely solely on a funny voice for his roles. The actor says there’s a lot more to it than just that. “One can embellish with flair or an accent,” he says. “But ultimately you need to ground the character in some form of recognizable truth.”
And if you want to judge him for his odd vocal choices or mannerisms, that’s on you. The actor says he couldn’t care less what people think. Hardy explains, “Tom is very mercenary when it comes to work. I cannot give a fuck what the writer, or the director, or Larry in Baltimore thinks about my choices.”
Yes, that’s Hardy speaking in third-person.
“Sometimes I talk in the third person because it’s a lot easier to see myself at work as a piece of meat. So when Tommy says he doesn’t give a fuck what you think, it’s only because I give too much of a fuck, and it gets to a point where it stifles me,” he says.
“Fonzo” is expected to release sometime in 2019.
