With “Tótem” finally getting released in theaters this week, we’re thrilled to share an exclusive clip from the family drama. The film tells the story of a family preparing for a birthday party, as seen through the point of view of a young girl, Sol. However, as the party draws closer, and young Sol begins to understand the full weight of the day, “Tótem” showcases the emotional gravity that is present in every moment of this story.

“Tótem” is the second film from acclaimed director Lila Avilés, who broke out with her debut, “The Chambermaid.” The film stars Naíma Sentíes, Monserrat Marañon, Marisol Gasé, Saori Gurza, and Teresita Sánchez.

In our review of the film, we said, “A luminous and soul-nourishing microcosm built on profound love in the face of impending grief, the film reveals itself in the charged interactions between its multiple characters.”

“Tótem” arrives in select theaters on January 26 before expanding in the weeks to follow. You can watch the exclusive clip below.

Here’s the synopsis:

In a bustling Mexican household, seven-year-old Sol is swept up in a whirlwind of preparations for the birthday party for her father, Tona, led by her mother, aunts and other relatives. As the day goes on, building to an event both anticipated and dreaded, Sol begins to understand the gravity of the celebration this year and watches as her family does the same. This poignant and emotionally expansive film from Lila Aviles (The Chambermaid) cements her skill at directing dynamic ensemble performances in her stunning sophomore effort.
