After a debut at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Nicloas Cage‘s next film “The Surfer” has not only landed a trailer but Lionsgate is set to release the beachy psychological thriller on May 2.
Lorcan Finnegan directs from a script penned by Thomas Martin, where Cage plays a man returning to an Australian beach that holds a special place in his childhood memories only to run into a group of local surfers who consider outsiders on their beach as fodder for bullying and violence. As you might assume, Cage’s character is pushed to his breaking point.
Other actors assembled alongside Cage include Julian McMahon, Nic Cassim, Miranda Tapsell, Alexander Bertrand, and Justin Rosniak.
An official logline for “The Surfer” via Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions reads:
In the psychological thriller directed by Lorcan Finnegan, a man returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son. But his desire to hit the waves is thwarted by a group of locals whose mantra is “Don’t live here, don’t surf here.” Humiliated and angry, the man is drawn into a conflict that keeps rising in concert with the punishing heat of the summer and pushes him to his breaking point.
Leonora Darby, James Harris, Robert Connolly, James Grandison, Brunella Coccighlia, Cage, and Nathan Klingher are named as part of the film’s producing team.
Another upcoming Cage project sees the Oscar-winning actor making a return to the world of live-action Marvel characters as he’ll be back as “Spider-Man: Noir“ for an Amazon Prime Video series developed by Sony after voicing the character in “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.“
