January is a weird time at the box office. It’s a studio dumping ground for crap they can’t be bothered with and yet people still want to see movies, thus we have weird shit happening like “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters” earning over $200 million worldwide (and spawning a sequel) and the barely stitched together “A Haunted House” also doing way better than expected numbers on a nothing budget. So, of course, there’s going to be a follow-up.
Open Road Films has announced “A Haunted House 2” (which they point out is just a working title) with writer/star Marlon Wayans set to return. The big question is what there will be left to spoof especially after “Scary Movie 5” tackles everything under the sun this Friday. Maybe everyone involved is assuming that (hopefully) people have better things to do than spend good money on that this weekend, but then again, we would have said the same thing about ‘Haunted House’ a few months ago and now look where we are.
Production will begin this summer (yes, it’s really happening) with a winter 2013/2014 release planned which is basically code for another January toss away. [ComingSoon]
