Way back in May 2021, it was reported that George A. Romero’s widow, Suzanne Romero, was in development on a new sequel in the “Night of the Living Dead” franchise that her husband spearheaded before his passing. Well, it appears that the past two years have been very fruitful and the Romero estate is ready to begin production on “Twilight of the Dead.”
According to Deadline, Suzanne Romero has confirmed that a script is written for “Twilight of the Dead” and production is hoping to begin by the end of 2023. This is the latest film in the ‘Dead’ franchise directed by George A. Romero. “Twilight of the Dead” is based on a treatment the late filmmaker worked on before his passing. Apparently, a director is being found now and casting was to begin soon, but is delayed due to the SAG strike. The production company is now looking for an interim agreement to begin production.
“I’m delighted to be joining forces with Roundtable to bring the eerie evolution of Romero’s universe to the screen,” said Suzanne Romero. “Roundtable impressed me with their long-term and deep love of George’s work. I believe they have the vision to produce the best version of this movie that honors the Romero legacy. I can’t wait to start filming!”
The latest report claims “Twilight of the Dead” will tell the story of the last humans in the world caught between factions of the dead on a tropical island. As you might expect from a Romero ‘Dead’ film, there is expected to be plenty of sociopolitical commentary.
Romero’s ‘Dead’ franchise is the high water mark of the zombie genre. ‘Night’ is regarded as one of the greatest horror films to ever exist. ‘Dawn’ and ‘Day’ are both beloved by fans of the franchise. The only real down moment in the franchise is “Land of the Dead,” from 2005. Though still written and directed by Romero, ‘Land’ just felt very 2000s and didn’t have the same delight of the first three films.
A release date for “Twilight of the Dead” is unknown at this time.
