After nearly a decade in development, the film adaptation of “Uncharted,” one of the best-selling video-game franchises of the past decade, finally hits theaters in winter 2022. Fans of the series will experience the character Nate Drake using his quick wits and social savvy to hunt treasure on the big screen.
Drake’s movie debut takes inspiration from the fourth installment of the game franchise, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and will serve as a prequel of sorts to the rest of the series. Tom Holland plays Drake, a brilliant young smart-aleck with a shady past who picks up the lucrative trade of treasure hunting. Mark Wahlberg is on board to play Victor Sullivan, Drake’s mentor in all things fortune-seeking. Antonio Banderas, Sophia Taylor Ali, and Tati Gabrielle also star in supporting roles.

“Uncharted” has had a lot of hiccups in its transition from video-game to Hollywood blockbuster. Wahlberg was initially in talks to play Drake early in the film’s development back in 2010, with David O. Russell set to direct, and many other directors and leading men have filled those slots in the near-decade since then. Directorial duties passed through the hands of Neil Burger, Seth Gordon, Shawn Levy, Dan Trachtenberg, and Travis Knight before Ruben Fleischer finally took over the project early this year.
So, what Hollywood hero from years past will Nathan Drake most resemble in his globe-trotting antics? Indiana Jones? James Bond? John McClane? A male version of Lara Croft from “Tomb Raider” feels more likely. Fans of the series already have some idea, but the rest of us find out when “Uncharted” hits theaters next year on Feb 18, 2022, from Sony Pictures. Watch the new trailer below.
