It worked for “Straight Outta Compton,” which charted the rise and fall of the rap group, N.W.A. So, apparently, Universal thinks the rap biopic genre is something worth exploring with an upcoming film based on the life and career of Snoop Dogg.
According to THR, a film about the life of Snoop Dogg is being developed with writer Joe Robert Cole and director Allen Hughes attached. Joe Robert Cole is probably best known for his collaborations with Ryan Coogler on the two “Black Panther” films. Hughes is known for the films that he co-directed along with his brother, Albert Hughes, including “Dead Presidents” and “Menace II Society.”

As you might expect, there’s plenty of ground to cover in the life story of Snoop Dogg. Obviously, there’s the whole coming from nothing and achieving superstar status, but there’s just so much more. From his murder trial to his later career as almost a comedian, Snoop Dogg has really done it all.
“I waited a long time to put this project together because I wanted to choose the right director, the perfect writer, and the greatest movie company I could partner with that could understand the legacy that I’m trying to portray on screen, and the memory I’m trying to leave behind,” said Snoop Dogg. “It was the perfect marriage. It was holy matrimony, not holy macaroni.”
Hughes added, “Snoop Dogg is one of the most internationally beloved figures in hip-hop. There’s just something about his energy that brings people of all walks of life together. Snoop Dogg, not just the artist, but the man and his brand, has transcended generations with his connection and appeal to audiences. His story is so authentic and utterly inspiring, and to have the opportunity to tell his story allows me to go back to the hood 30 years after ‘Menace II Society,’ and say more now than I could then.”
Since the world is obsessed with cinematic universes, the untitled Snoop Dogg biopic actually serves as a pseudo spinoff of “Straight Outta Compton.” Even though he’s not featured very much, a young Snoop Dogg does show up in some scenes in that film.
A release date for the film has yet to be announced.
