Russos Brothers Confirmed To Direct 'Avengers: Secret Wars'

On the heels of the projected massive box office success of Marvel Studios’ latest Multiverse event, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” they’ve finally given fans a big update concerning “Avengers: Secret Wars” at this weekend’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con. The studio has confirmed that they’ll be reuniting with sibling directors, The Russo Brothers, after the two delivered the one-two punch of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.” The two will also handle the just announced “Avengers: Doomsday,” which will recast Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, meaning he’ll be the Doom from the Fantastic Four’s world, which is an alternate multiverse timeline.

Without spoiling the ending of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” there was some minor telegraphing about Wade Wilson’s participation in the future “Avengers” installment (a “Secret Wars” comic book featuring The Beyonder and Doctor Doom had been spotted early on in trailers). Although, given the involvement of the TVA from “Loki,” anything is possible, and who will get pulled out of their respective universes isn’t completely clear.

The Russo Brothers have a longstanding working relationship with Marvel, returning to “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Captain America: Civil War.” Their “Avengers” installments prove they are extremely talented at juggling larger-than-usual superhero rosters and dividing their adventures into groupings. Their most recent effort was the sci-fi road trip film “The Electric State” for Netflix with actress Millie Bobby Brown (“Stranger Things”) in the main role.

They’ve previously stated an interest in getting their hands on Wolverine and the X-Men; something like ‘Secret Wars’ certainly will give them plenty of chances to do exactly that, perhaps even teeing up the new “X-Men” reboot as well. There is still a bit of a mystery about how Marvel brings mutants into the main universe of Earth-616, which has been established as the main MCU setting on the Sacred Timeline.

Disney plans to release “Avengers 5” on May 1, 2026, and “Avengers: Secret Wars” on May 7, 2027.
