For many first-time filmmakers, the idea of a period genre film might be a bit too ambitious. But for the folks behind “The Vast of Night,” that’s exactly the challenge they put themselves in, as they created a supernatural mystery film that relies heavily on the atmosphere of the 1950s.

As seen in the first trailer, “The Vast of Night” tells the story of a young switchboard operator in 1950s New Mexico that intercepts some calls from folks experiencing something strange in the sky. She teams up with a local radio DJ that is also experiencing odd noises and signals of an unknown origin. Together, the duo attempts to find the true nature of the phenomenon and whether or not it’s something…extraterrestrial?
The film stars Sierra McCormick, Jake Horowitz, Bruce Davis, and Gail Cronauer. “Vast of Night” is directed by Andrew Patterson, with a script written by James Montague and Craig W. Sanger. The screenwriting duo are actually nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for in the Best First Screenplay category.

“The Vast of Night” doesn’t have an official release date yet, but will be hitting Amazon Prime Video and theaters “soon.”
Here’s the synopsis:
In the twilight of the 1950s, on one fateful night in New Mexico, a young, winsome switchboard operator Fay (Sierra McCormick) and charismatic radio DJ Everett (Jake Horowitz) discover a strange audio frequency that could change their small town and the future forever. Dropped phone calls, AM radio signals, secret reels of tape forgotten in a library, switchboards, crossed patchlines and an anonymous phone call lead Fay and Everett on a scavenger hunt toward the unknown.
