Venice 2024: Pedro Almodóvar’s 'The Room Next Door,' Starring Tilda Swinton & Julianne Moore, To Play In Competition

Every year, the Venice Film Festival becomes one of the most star-studded film events. With high profile studio films usually getting prime selection spots, it has turned into the place to screen a film you think might have awards appeal. And this year is no different, as we have learned a number of big film projects are debuting there, including the latest addition, “The Room Next Door.”

According to Variety, Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Room Next Door” is slated to have its world premiere at Venice this year. The film is expected to take part in the competition group, as well. “The Room Next Door” stars Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore and is said to be about the estranged relationship between a mother and daughter.

“The Room Next Door” also marks the English-language feature debut for Almodóvar. When it was first announced, there were many who just assumed this would be an automatic Oscars contender, as the filmmaker rarely misses. And judging by the Venice selection, it’s clear this is a film that is a prime contender come awards season.

Most recently, Almodóvar released “Parallel Mothers,” which also debuted at Venice and took home the Volpi Cup for Best Actress. The film was also nominated for two Oscars, as was his previous film, “Pain and Glory.” So again, high expectations for “The Room Next Door.”

“The Room Next Door” is set to join previously announced films such as “Joker: Folie à Deux,” “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice,” “Queer,” and “Maria.”

The Venice Film Festival begins on August 28.
