The first thing you should know about Tyler Shields — making his directorial debut with “Final Girl” — is that he’s a photographer by day, and kind of a poor man’s Terry Richardson (though given the current heavy controversy around the latter, Shields may have new gigs available to him). Just look at this photo shoot he did with Abigail Breslin, the star of his film. But hey, credit to Shields, he has managed to do something Richardson hasn’t — make a movie. It’s just too bad it doesn’t look very good.
Wes Bentley, Cameron Bright and Francesca Eastwood are among the co-stars of this one, about a bunch of teenage boys who kill girls for sport. But the tables are turned when they choose Veronica, because she’s secretly an assassin-in-training, and she’s made the gang of boys as her final test. Yeesh. Premise aside, it looks like Shields basically shot like his photos, putting the actors in front of cheap-looking backdrops, and letting them do their thing. And regardless of the visual style, this thing looks like it was made on a very small budget, with barely enough money for sets or rehearsals.
