Ewan McGregor has been in an upswing of late. Shaking off the creative stagnation of the 'Star Wars' prequels, he's been back doing solid work recently in movies like "The Ghost Writer" and this year's "Beginners" (we should also mention that he also totally kills it in Soderbergh's "Haywire," out next year). We're not sure if his next film, the sci-fi-y romance "Perfect Sense," will be part of this creative resurgence, but the just-released trailer does look intriguing.
The clip starts out like any number of romantic dramas, with McGregor's chef (we must admit we were afraid that this was some kind of movie about cooking, which would automatically make it terrible in our book) falling in love with the beautiful and mysterious Eva Green (another wonderful actor that could use a career bump). Later in the trailer, though, it's revealed that Green is an epidemiologist on the forefront of a viral outbreak that causes people to lose their senses. Crazy! Of course the trailer juxtaposes the tumultuous nature of the couple's relationship with the end of social order in the world. Looks interesting, if a bit heavy-handed on a symbolic level.
The movie, originally called "The Last Word" was directed by McGregor's "Young Adam" helmer David Mackenzie (who most recently gave us the miserable prostitution drama "Spread"). It debuted way back at Sundance of this year (it came out in Britain this fall; critical consensus seems to be split with a 50% Rotten Tomatoes rating). While we're wary of a movie that takes this long to make it from the festival circuit to your local bijou, we're hoping for the best on this one. It will be released courtesy of IFC Films on February 3rd, 2012. [Yahoo Movies]
