Watch: Cate Blanchett & Rooney Mara Begin To Fall In Love In The First Clip From Todd Haynes’ ‘Carol’

CarolIf super hero movies and blockbusters are taking over at the box-office and, as some predict, dramas and art movies may head to VOD and TV cable premieres, then adults should be grateful that Cannes will always exist as a global launching pad for dramas. And if there’s only a handful of filmmakers left who represent a kind of superstar prestige drama that “matters,” then director Todd Haynes has to be one of them.

Off the heels of his somewhat underrated and underappreciated HBO miniseries “Mildred Pierce” (which received solid reviews, but is capital A f*cking awesome), Haynes latest is “Carol,” an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s “The Price Of Salt” which centers on an illicit lesbian affair between two women in the 1950s. Haynes’ terrific cast stars Cate Blanchett in the lead, Rooney Mara as her co-star and supporting work by Kyle Chandler, Sarah Paulson and Carrie Brownstein.

The film is about to make its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this weekend and so naturally, the Weinstein Company has released the first clip from the film. We can’t lie, Haynes is a giant and we’re deeply excited for this one; “Carol” cracked the top 10 of our 100 Most Anticipated Films Of 2015 list. No release date has been set, but we bet the picture hits the fall film festival circuit in North America and that paves the way for an Oscar-contending fall run. Watch the first clip below.
