With Bennett Miller‘s “Foxcatcherbouncing to 2014 and Martin Scorsese‘s “The Wolf of Wall Street” potentially doing the same, it seems there is even more room for Steve McQueen‘s widely praised (our review) “12 Years a Slave” to get comfortable in the pole position (at the moment) of the Oscar season race. And with audiences soon to share in the experience that left many critics shaken, the first clip from the movie has arrived.

Chiwetel Ejiofor leads the movie, based on a true story, playing Solomon Northup, a man tricked and sold into slavery. But in this scene, we see him during happier times in the North, shopping openly and comfortably in a store owned by a white proprietor, when in walks a reminder that not everyone is as blessed as he is. It’s a pretty nice piece of drama, and you’ll also hear Hans Zimmer‘s score in there too, which is apparently something a bit different than his more BRAAAM-tacular material.

“12 Years a Slave” arrives on October 18th in limited release. Watch below. [Vulture]
