She’s had a few attempts by now, but Jennifer Lopez is still in search of her movie comeback. While one-time "Bennifer" partner Ben Affleck has reinvented himself as a director and as Batman, Lopez has gone a while without a real hit, with films like "The Back-up Plan," "What To Expect When You’re Expecting" and "Parker" not quite delivering, and no big-screen appearance in two years (a sign, no doubt, of the relative paucity of roles for women when they enter their forties).
But Lopez has something on the way that seems like it could be a legit hit: falling in the footsteps of Halle Berry, who had a sleeper hit a few years back with "The Call," she’s going into thriller territory with next January’s "The Boy Next Door," and a trailer has just arrived. Produced by prolific horror maestro Jason Blum and directed by "The Fast & The Furious" helmer Rob Cohen, Lopez plays a teacher who has an ill-advised fling with her teenage neighbor (Ryan Guzman), only for him to become a dangerous stalker when she tries to break it off.
The film also stars John Corbett and Kristin Chenoweth, and though it looks like fairly low-brow 90s-thriller-throwback fare, there’s plenty of reasons to think that the film could be a money-maker: it’s a commercial premise, Lopez is due a hit, and this sort of movie often does well in the new year doldrums.
