Watch: First Trailer For New 'Godzilla' Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen & Bryan Cranston Roars

Godzilla

If we were to hazard a guess based on the myriad viral images Legendary Pictures has released of their “Godzilla” reboot/redo/do-over, we’d say sinkholes—and ones some world governments believe should be secret—factor in quite heavily in the plot. Or at least the mechanics of what gets the story engine moving. Following the leak of Comic-Con footage in October that made some impressive waves, the official trailer for “Godzilla” is here. Run for cover.

A couple things distinguish this new on the cinema’s favorite monster mythology. The first is “Monsters” director Gareth Edwards making his blockbuster debut, the other is the awesome/bonkers cast which includes: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, David Strathairn, Ken Watanabe, Juliette Binoche and Sally Hawkins. Here’s the official synopsis which doesn’t say much:

An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

However, Edwards recently spoke to USA Today about the movie and you can expect some form of disaster porn with links to a recent tragedy that the movies can’t seem to avoid. “To me, he’s like a force of nature, like the wrath of God or vengeance for the way we’ve behaved,” Edwards explained. “If this really happened, it would be like Sept. 11. I want it to be epic. I want to get the hairs on the back of your neck up.”

“I’ve just got a secret fantasy—well, it’s not very secret anymore — about living in a world where there’s fantastical things like giant creatures and what it would really be like and trying to take it seriously,” he also said. “And there’s no bigger or better icon than Godzilla.” Indeed.

“Godzilla” stomps on May 16, 2014. Watch below.
