If you’ve had your ear to the ground, you’ve likely heard the faint rumbling of buzz behind "Starred Up." The prison drama steadily made its way through the festival circuit last year and into 2014, picking up acclaim wherever it stopped, including from our own team, with "Starred Up" making our 21 Best Films We’ve Already Seen list for the year. And now it’s finally coming to theatres and the first U.S. trailer is here.
Directed by David Mackenzie, and powered by what we called "a stunning, incendiary performance" by Jack O’Connell (who has since, unsurprisingly, landed the lead Angelina Jolie‘s "Unbroken"), the movie tells the story of what unfolds when a 19-year-old gets transferred to the same prison where his estranged father is serving time. It’s gritty stuff with strong supporting turns by Ben Mendelsohn and Rupert Friend.
"Starred Up" opens on August 29th. Watch below.
